The MP for Glasgow North West, Carol Monaghan, opposes the upcoming closure of the Nationwide branch in Anniesland. The closure of this branch would see Glasgow North West reduced to having just one remaining bank branch.
Nationwide have announced that on the 27th of October, they are closing their Anniesland branch. This branch provides a crucial service to local residents across all of Glasgow North West. The proposed closure will severely harm those in the local community who desperately rely on face-to-face banking services.
Ms Monaghan has written to Nationwide seeking a thorough explanation as to why this decision was taken and what will happen to existing staff. Ms Monaghan has also requested an urgent meeting with Nationwide bosses to discuss the impact of the decision on the local community.
Commenting, Carol Monaghan MP said:
“The decision to close the Anniesland Nationwide branch is devastating to our local community. This closure leaves the entirety of Glasgow North West with just one remaining over-the-counter bank branch.
“In-person banking is crucial for the most vulnerable people in our community, such as older individuals and those without internet access, so it is a sad reality that once again they will feel the biggest impact of this decision. As we enter a difficult winter period, people will desperately rely on the vital support and advice that staff in banks can provide. With the cost-of-living crisis already affecting many in our communities, the ability to carry out face-to-face banking will become more important. Financial advice and support offered by staff in banks cannot be easily replaced by online services.
“I have written to Nationwide requesting an urgent meeting with officials on this issue”.
